DISCUSSION
On May 3, 2016, the Department of Library Services was selected as an Emerging City Champion by 8-80 Cities and the Knight Foundation, to launch a Book Bike program to deliver library services via bicycle at community events throughout the City. Services provided will include checkout/returns and library card registration using a mobile device. The Book Bike program was successfully tested during the 2016 Beach Streets event with a borrowed oversized tricycle. The video of the successful test run was submitted and was a critical component that contributed to the grant award.

The Knight Foundation invests in civic innovators who help cities attract and keep talented people, expand economic opportunity and create a culture of engagement. The Emerging City Champions Program is “a fellowship program for young civic innovators with transformative ideas.” The proposed Book Bike program will further the goals of the Emerging City Champions Program by helping to develop an innovative micro-program that will enhance the libraries efforts at community outreach and help to bring library services and awareness of library programs into the larger Long Beach community.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Amy R. Webber on June 7, 2016 and by Budget Analysis Officer Rhutu Amin Gharib on June 20, 2016.
