TITLE
Recommendation to receive a report from the Water Department on conservation and education measures being implemented throughout the City, including information and resources being distributed to residents and businesses.  Also, receive a report from the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department on water irrigation efficiency and conservation measures; and

Request City Attorney to advise City Council on an appropriate water conservation ordinance, which would place mandatory restrictions on certain water use activities and prohibit water waste.

DISCUSSION
On Thursday, June 14,2007, the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners made a Declaration of Immediate Extraordinary Water Conservation, calling for an immediate voluntary increase in water conservation citywide, as a precaution, to forestall or lessen the local impact of a potential water supply shortage.

The Declaration was necessitated by a number of factors including an interruption in the supply of water from the San Francisco Bay/Sacramento Delta area to mitigate environmental concerns.

All customers (residential and business) are being urged to immediately increase water conservation efforts.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

BONNIE LOWENTHAL, VICE MAYOR, COUNCILMEMBER, FIRST DISTRICT
GERRIE SCHIPSKE, COUNCILWOMAN, FIFTH DISTRICT
