WITHDRAWN
Recommendation to request City Manager to share his candidates for interim Chief of Police with the Mayor and City Council prior to making a final selection as well as the attributes and skill set being sought for a new Chief of Police in Closed Session; and
Request City Manager to share his top candidates in order of preference with the Mayor and City Council prior to making his final selection in Closed Session.
DISCUSSION
Public safety is a top priority of the Mayor and City Council, ensuring that residents and businesses receive the highest level of law enforcement service possible from our men and women in the Long Beach Police Department. As such, the Chief of Police is among the most important positions in the City of Long Beach organizational structure for city management and community alike. The Chief of Police is expected to manage daily and long term department staffing, budgets and operations, including the enforcement of the penal divisions of the City Charter, the ordinances of the City, and the laws of the state and nation for the purpose of protecting persons and property. The City Charter empowers the City Manager to appoint, direct and supervise the Chief of Police as a position within the Manager-directed departments of the City.
With the anticipated election of LBPD Chief Jim McDonnell to Los Angeles County Sheriff on November 4th, we believe it is prudent to be included in the important discussion of his interim replacement and ultimate successor.
FISCAL IMPACT
None.
