TITLE

Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $5,000, offset by the Seventh Council District One-time District Priority Funds, transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a contribution to the CSULB 49er Foundation; and

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $5,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION

The Spanish Language Program is the largest program in the Language Department, serving 60% of its students. Despite this fact, the Spanish Program has the smallest amount of donor support. The program is launching a crowd-funding campaign to increase their ability to offer scholarships to students in both BA and MA Spanish Language and Literature programs. Most students in the Spanish language program are first generation, working class, and Latinx.

Councilmember Uranga knows that Spanish students should be celebrated for their efforts and hard work, for their contributions to the City of Long Beach and our state, and for studying the language and literature of their and their ancestors’ countries of origin.

This matter has been reviewed by Budget Analyst Joe R. Guerrero on September 14, 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to the CSULB 49er Foundation. The total appropriation increase of $5,000 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Seventh Council District One-time District Priority funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to have minimal impact on staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.
