TITLE
Recommendation to direct City Manager, or his designee, to assemble a recruitment team to work with our Economic & Property Development, all applicable city departments, County & State Agencies such as GO-BIZ and private partners to develop an incentive package to entice large corporations such as Amazon to consider the City of Long Beach as the location for its next headquarters.
DISCUSSION
As the 7th largest city in California which is the world's 5th largest economy, the City of Long Beach is in a unique position to serve as the new headquarters for the California Headquarters for Amazon.com Inc. Founded in 1994, Amazon has become a leading online resale and retail shopping service, with overall sales at nearly 136 billion dollars, and currently employees over 300,000 people. Additionally, Amazon is currently rated by Forbes as #3 on the Most Innovative Companies list and #6 on their World's most valuable brands list.
It was announced earlier this month that Amazon.com was seeking a 2nd Headquarters in the United States which would result in 50,000 new jobs. This opportunity would be an incredible jolt in our local economy. It would also represent the mostjobs in the City of Long Beach from a single employer, more than the existing top 9 Private and Public Employers combined. Long Beach has the perfect mix of economic drivers to provide a great location for the growth of Amazon.
