DISCUSSION
POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
As the City continues to experience significant expansion in both the residential and commercial sectors, a significant increase in litter has been observed. While numerous City efforts are in place to abate litter, a comprehensive effort is needed to address this growing blight on our community.  In support of the City Council's core goal "to improve environmental conditions in the City," the Department of Public Works, Environmental Services Bureau, will be launching a citywide litter abatement program in April. The program will kick off with an extensive community outreach effort and community clean up events in each Council District.
The Department of Public Works, Environmental Services Bureau will be making a presentation at the March 22, 2005, City Council meeting to update you on the progress of this effort.

This letter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Lisa Malmsten on March 15, 2005 and Budget Officer David Wodynski on March 14,2005.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is not time critical.

FISCAL IMPACT
Funding for this effort will be provided from the Refuse Fund (EF330) in the Department of Public Works (PW). The Department will attempt to absorb current costs associated with this program using FY 05 appropriations, but may be required to return to the City Council at a future date for a budget adjustment to ensure that the proper appropriations are in place.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
