Title
Recommendation to receive and file report on Tsunami Emergency Preparedness. (Citywide)
Discussion
On January 4, 2005 Councilmember Frank Colonna requested the City Manager to prepare a tsunami emergency preparedness report. The City of Long Beach continues to address emergency preparedness with an All Hazards philosophy, including events such as earthquake, flood and tsunami. You may recall that on October 19, 2004, the City Council adopted a Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan for the City of Long Beach. The Plan identifies the potential risks and losses from natural hazards, and promotes mitigation to protect lives, property, facilities, infrastructure, and the environment. It was developed in accordance with the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and included and encouraged public participation. This Plan will now allow the City to compete for upcoming federal grant funds.
The attached is a summary description of tsunamis and their possible impact, detection and notification processes, evacuation procedures, public education initiatives, and the City's emergency response plan.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard F. Anthony on February 22, 2005 and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on February 16, 2005.
