(Citywide)

DISCUSSION
As required by California Education Code 3043, the Long Beach Unified School District of Los Angeles County (LBUSD), Division of Special Education, provides Extended School Year (ESY) services to its Special Education students, who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) indicating the need for summer instruction in order to prevent regression. Traditionally, ESY instruction has been provided by LBUSD at its own program sites. However, beginning in the summer of 2013, LBUSD began offering its ESY students an alternative to traditional LBUSD onsite instruction by allowing them to select and attend non-LBUSD program sites throughout Long Beach. In the summer of 2013, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) and LBUSD entered into agreements to include PRM Summer Day Camps (Day Camps) as alternative ESY program sites for ESY students.

In April 2014, LBUSD requested the inclusion of ten PRM Day Camps as alternative program sites for its ESY students (Attachment). The recommended action would allow ESY students from Kindergarten to 1 ih grade the option of selecting and attending PRM Day Camps from June 16,2014 through August 29,2014. The specific selection of the Day Camps would be at the discretion of LBUSD and/or students' parents/guardians, and would be based upon the Day Camp's compatibility with each student's IEP.

All costs for the proposed inclusion of PRM Day Camps would be borne by LBUSD and the parents/guardians of the ESY students.
