DISCUSSION
The State of California, Department of Boating and Waterways (DBAW) Boating Safety and Enforcement Equipment Grant Program provides resources to purchase equipment for boating safety programs. The grant requires that all equipment purchased is for the sole use of the boating safety unit, in this case, the Long Beach Fire Department's Marine Safety Division. The City of Long Beach was awarded grants from the DBAW in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2005 totaling $217,000 towards the purchase of dive equipment and replacement engines for rescue boats.

For the grant year 2010, the Marine Safety Division has been awarded $59,000 from the DBAW to purchase boating safety equipment that will enhance the Marine Safety Division's high-level boating safety program, including a personal watercrafUinflatable rescue boat trailer, Class B Automated Identification System transponders for rescue boats and a drop scan sonar compass. A portion of the grant funds will also be used to replace existing aged dive gear and an exiting inflatable rescue boat outboard engine.

This item was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary J. Anderson on January 13, 2010 and Budget and Performance Management Bureau Manager David Wodynski on January 14, 2010.
