TITLE

WITHDRAWN

Recommendation to request City Manager to direct the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications, in coordination with the Departments of Police and Fire, to develop a policy whereby when critically injured public safety personnel are transported to Long Beach trauma care facilities in vehicles other than ambulances that LBFD personnel are on-hand at the respective facility in order to ensure quick transition between transport and receiving hospital/medical staff.

DISCUSSION

In the case of a disaster, mass casualty event or incident of critically injured public safety personnel, emergency responders and public safety officers as well as the health care system in general may become overwhelmed. There are many factors at play when responding to such events, including triage and the movement of patients to collection points, treatment and ultimately transportation to care facilities.

Under normal circumstances, hospitals expect ambulances to deliver patients into (inside) the medical facility. However, when an injured patient, even if a public safety officer, is transported by non-traditional methods such as a police car or undercover vehicle, medical resources are not on hand to move the patient from the transportation mode to the trauma care facility and precious moments are wasted.

This proposed policy would address emergency situations when the required triage, treatment and transport of injured public safety personnel is imperative.
