TITLE
Recommendation to request City Council to direct the City Clerk Department to support the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Midnight Madness Voter Registration Program on October 20, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, on the Long Beach City Hall/Civic Center campus. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
Pursuant to the Elections Code Section 2102, October 20, 2008, is the last day to register to vote for the November 4, 2008, Statewide Presidential Election. As of September 2008, there were 199,174 registered voters in the City of Long Beach. Between September and the close of registration on October 20th, voter registration in the City is projected to grow by 4.9% to a total 209, 100 registered voters. This projection is based on the growth that took place just before the last Statewide Presidential Election.
The aim of Midnight Madness is to raise awareness of the voter registration deadline and maximize the opportunity for eligible County and Long Beach residents to register to vote for the November 4 ,2008 Statewide Presidential Election.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
Approval of this action is necessary so that the City Clerk Department may continue, with full logistical and local outreach support of the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Midnight Madness Program. Access to registration tables and materials will be provided from the 333 W. Ocean Boulevard entrance to the Civic Center.
FISCAL IMPACT
The appropriations necessary to cover the cost of the Midnight Madness Program are contained in the City Clerk Department 2009 Fiscal Year Budget. The estimated costs to support Midnight Madness will range from $3,000 to $5,000. Costs relate to support provided by Public Works and City Hall security staff.
