TITLE
Recommendation to request that at least two teachers from Long Beach Unified School District be appointed to the Youth and Gang Violence Prevention Task Force.

DISCUSSION
Given the recent and escalating incidents of youth on youth violence in various areas around the city, we fully support the involvement of the Youth and Gang Violence Prevention Task Force by providing a major role in advising the Council on strategies and actions to address these problems. To this end, we are requesting that at least two teachers from the Long Beach Unified School district be included on the Task Force. Their presence in the schools and their relationship with the student body make them a wealth of information and insight regarding the issues and concerns of our youth. Recent
discussions with Superintendent Steinhauser and with Karen Hilburn of the task force emphasized the value of teacher input. We look forward to your support on this important issue. If this request does not meet your approval, please advise us as soon as possible.
