TITLE

DISCUSSION
Sixth District Council member Laura Richardson was elected to the California State Assembly at the Statewide General Election held November 7,2006. In accordance with City Charter Section 204, the City Council is required to declare this Council seat vacant and call a Special Municipal Election to fill the vacancy, to be held within 120 days of the declaration. In order to meet the City Charter deadlines, the election will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, 119 days from the adoption of the attached Resolution declaring the vacancy. With adoption of the recommended action, the candidate-filing period will open on January 8, 2007 and close on February 2,2007.
 
FISCAL IMPACT
Costs for a special election in the Sixth Council District are estimated at $107,372.
