TITLE

Recommendation to request City Manager to report back to the Mayor and City Council no later than 30 days from this action regarding the number of residents living near hazardous waste facilities in the City of Long Beach.

DISCUSSION

The Los Angeles Times on April 12, 2007 reported that "California has the nation's highest number of minorities near hazardous waste facilities" and that specifically Los Angeles/Long Beach ranked first among major urban areas with the most people living near hazardous waste and toxic facilities and other potentially dangerous industries and that the rate of minority residents in areas with multiple hazards was even higher. (See attached article.)

Unfortunately, the article did not differentiate the exact figures for Long Beach only nor the specifics of the types of hazardous waste and toxic facilities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
