Recommendation to request City Council approval of the 2019 Federal Legislative Agenda as recommended by the Federal Legislative Committee.
DISCUSSION
Each year the City Council adopts a Federal Legislative Agenda, which outlines the City’s federal legislative priorities for the coming year. This document provides policy direction to staff on federal issues, and allows the City to support, oppose or work with our federal legislative delegates to advance priorities adopted by the City Council.
The Federal Legislation Committee (Committee) met on March 12, 2019, received staff’s recommended changes for the 2019 Federal Legislative Agenda and voted to forward those changes, along with three additional changes from the Committee to the City Council for consideration and adoption. The Committee’s proposed changes are described below:

Demographic data is being updated to reflect the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent estimates. This sentence will now read, “The City is ethnically diverse with: 42.8% Latino/Hispanic, 27.6% Caucasian, 12.9% Black or African American, 13.2% Asian, 1.2% American Indian and Alaskan Native, and 0.9% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander.”
The top employers in Long Beach is updated to note Molina Healthcare and The Boeing Company.

2. Foster innovation to address economic and social changes
Rather than remove Item (d), amend it to read, “Support federal policies that would be applicable nationwide to create a system that would enable medical cannabis to be distributed at accredited pharmacies.”
