DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach has been awarded a new two-year grant from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in the amount of $164,754. The purpose of the grant is to implement a Youth
Drinking Driver Prevention Program in the City of Long Beach.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Drinking Driver Program is working in a collaborative partnership to implement a Youth Drinking Driver Prevention
Coalition. The Coalition is made up of representatives from the DHHS, Police Department, Long Beach Unified School District and State Alcohol and Beverage Control, as well as
interested parents. The grant targets the prevention of underage drinking and driving in cooperation with the Coalition.
The Coalition will:
1) assist in the design of the prevention program in partnership with media, law enforcement, courts, civic organizations, employers, and health providers; help in increasing awareness in youth regarding the dangers of underage drinking and driving; and,
3) challenge the youth to find ways to warn their peers and younger students about the dangers of drinking and driving.
