DISCUSSION
Since 1997, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has provided services
under the Family Support Program. The program is funded by the Los Angeles County
Department of Children and Family Services, through the South Bay Center for
Counseling, which acts as a lead agency for the Family Support Program in Service
Planning Area 8.
Under the agreement, the DHHS provides Structured Parent-Child and/or Family-Centered
Activities in conjunction with the Department's Community Family Preservation Network.
Services are provided in cooperation with other City Departments and community-based
organizations. Activities include family dinner nights, parent-child trips to sporting and
cultural events, and a community holiday party. Activities like these are important to
provide individuals with parenting skills and to build family socialization. The target service
area for the Family Support Program is the entire City of Long Beach. Last year, the
program served 1,793 children and 808 adults.
This matter was reviewed by Senior Deputy City Attorney Donna F. Gwin and Budget
Management Officer David Wodynski on September 21,2005.
