Recommendation to receive and file an oral report from the Economic Development Department recognizing May 7-12, 2018, as “Economic Development Week” in the City of Long Beach, in conjunction with the International Economic Development Council effort, to increase awareness about the role of economic development in the lives of residents nationwide. DISCUSSION
In 2016, the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), the largest professional organization of its kind serving economic developers, created national Economic Development Week (EDW) to increase awareness for local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities, and increase quality of life. By recognizing EDW, the City will call attention to the efforts of the Economic Development Department and partners across the City to create economic opportunities for workers, investors, and entrepreneurs. The City will also join more than 40 communities nationwide that have officially proclaimed the celebration and their support for the economic development profession’s contribution to their local economies.
This year’s EDW coincides with the one-year anniversary of the City Council’s adoption of the Blueprint for Economic Development (Blueprint). On April 25, 2018, City staff showcased achievements and provided the first annual update of the Blueprint at the California State University Long Beach (CSULB) Regional Economic Forum. Highlights showcased at the event included the creation of the CSULB Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the launch of online tools for investors and entrepreneurs, progress on the City Council’s “Everyone In” Economic Inclusion Initiative, and implementation of the City’s first microfinance platform-Kiva-among other new programs to create economic opportunities for workers, investors, and entrepreneurs.
