DISCUSSION
In January 2015, the City Council signed onto My Brother’s Keeper (MBK), President Obama’s call to action to improve outcomes for young men and boys of color. In April 2016, the MBK Local Action Plan (MBK Plan), was completed in partnership with a broad array of community partners. In October 2016, the City engaged a FUSE Fellow to lead the work of the MBK Plan, continue to engage important partners, and develop a more detailed implementation plan outlining the goals and initiatives for the future of MBK in Long Beach.

On September 11, 2017, Long Beach Cares, in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department), was awarded a one-year grant from the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBKA) in the amount of $100,000 to implement the MBK Health Equity and Violence Prevention Youth Leadership Program. The MBK Alliance Request for Proposals required applicants to hold a 501(c)3 non-profit status; therefore, Long Beach Cares will serve as a fiscal agent for the Health Department.

The funding from the MBKA will allow the Office of Equity to:
· Implement the Health Equity and Violence Prevention Youth Leadership Program as outlined in the proposal to MBKA. The program will focus on reaching youth ages 16-22 from across the City.
