DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was awarded the Fiscal Year 2023 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program - Local Solicitation from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, in the amount of $220,138. The grant monies will be used to support the services of a DNA Criminalist by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department assigned to work on Long Beach DNA cases. The grant term is October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2026.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Arturo D. Sanchez on September 28, 2023 and by Budget Management Officer Nader Kaamoush on September 27, 2023.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on October 24, 2023 to expedite use of grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT
The City will receive grant funding up to $220,138 for the period of October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2026 from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. An appropriation increase is requested in the amount of $220,138 in the General Grants Fund Group in the Police Department, offset by grant revenue. The grant does not require any fund or in-kind service match. This recommendation has no staffing impact beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and is consistent with existing City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.
