DISCUSSION
Pacific Gateway (Pacific Gateway) is an ongoing sub-contractor to the United States Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Highways Administration via State Department of Transportation (Caltrans) funds that are utilized to provide construction trades training and apprenticeship readiness assistance to residents. This training and placement program was developed to correspond to local construction industry opportunities for skilled workers, and to provide low-income residents a range of rewarding career options in construction. The funding has supported community needs through the provision of intensive work/life skills training, basic skills tutoring, industry certifications and assistance in preparing to enter union apprenticeships.

In December 2009, Pacific Gateway responded to a Solicitation for Proposals offered by the DOT, in order to compete for additional training and placement funding for the Region. A grant award of $230,789 in ARRA funds to Pacific Gateway was announced in April 2010, along with thirty-four other grantees across the country. After an extended delay, Pacific Gateway received notice of the State’s intent to advance the contract process in July 2011. For this specific funding, approximately 125 individuals will be assisted through the program, focusing on training and placement activities from approximately June 2012 through May 2013.
