TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to display both the Blue Star Flag in the Plaza at City Hall as long as our country is in an active conflict and the Gold Star Flag on a permanent basis.

DISCUSSION
The Blue Star Mothers of America is a national organization of women who have children in the U.S. Military and the American Gold Star Flag is made up of mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country.

Each organization has been given the permission by U.S. Congress to display flags. The Blue Star Flag is to fly as long as our country is involved in an active conflict. The Gold Star Flag is to fly permanently as a reminder to us of those families whose offspring served and died so that this might be a better place in which to live.

The American Gold Star Manor, the only facility in our country dedicated to providing affordable housing for senior American Gold Star Mothers and Veterans, requests that the City of Long Beach display at the City Hall Plaza both the Blue and Gold Star Flags as a symbol of public reverence for the women and families who have given so much for this nation.

FISCAL IMPACT
None.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
