TITLE
Recommendation to request resolution in support of Long Beach proclaiming April 19, 2017 and every third Wednesday in April henceforth, as Renters Day.
DISCUSSION
Nearly 60% of Long Beach residents are renters, representing every segment of our population. Renters are investors in our City and drive our local economy as workers, youth, seniors, entrepreneurs, and business owners.
In the past year, Long Beach has turned its attention to lowering vacancy rates and rising rents, which are pricing more families out of the market. Those who are able to stay, often do so at a price. Two-thirds of Long Beach residents have a high housing cost burden, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on rent and must make difficult decisions about basic necessities.
The purpose of this resolution is to highlight the central role that renters play in our city, and to also acknowledge the unique challenges they face. In declaring April 19th Renters Day, we join other cities across the region in honoring the contributions of renters in Long Beach. We also stress the need to continue to collaborate to develop solutions for community well-being, neighborhood inclusivity, and economic prosperity.
