TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file the report on the 6th Healthcare Career Program.
DISCUSSION
In an effort to prepare youth for a possible career in the ever growing healthcare field, Councilman Andrews introduced a new healthcare pilot program in July of 2014. The program partnered Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Pacific Gateway, who coordinated the 6th District Healthcare Career Program. There were a total of 24 youth who participated in the Healthcare Special Program ranging from ages ranging from 15-24.
The program gave youth an opportunity to learn "real-time patient care" in a non-threatening simulation environment at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Youth participants were able see real life scenarios of what emergency room doctors and nurses experience on a daily basis through the hospital's state-of-the art simulation lab. All were trained on how to provide CPR They received a certificate of completion for their "Introduction to Medical Simulation: Hands-Only CPR". The youth also earned wages while participating in the program.
In addition, participants attended several Work Readiness Workshops at Pacific Gateway such as job search, job applications, resume workshops, cover letter, interviewing skills and techniques, communication and teambuilding, as well as mock interview. Youth worked closely with Pacific Gateway staff to prepare a resume, cover letter and assisted with finding employment. There was a total of 3 youth who were employed upon completion of the program.
