TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file communication from the Fire Chief to Marine Safety Division staff regarding staffing of the City's four rescue boats.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
During the Public Comment period of the May 20,2014 City Council meeting, a number of Long Beach Lifeguards spoke about issues surrounding the staffing of the City's four rescue boats in the Marine Safety Division. The Mayor and City Council requested that both a closed session and open session item be scheduled for the next date the City Council would meet.

The closed session is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on June 10, 2014. Also, attached for the City Council's reference is a copy of a letter from Fire Chief DuRee to Marine Safety Division staff that outlines his plan to provide fire training to the Lifeguards working on the rescue boats. This letter also provides clarification with regard to the interim staffing that will be in place while the training is taking place.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary Anderson on May 30, 2014.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on June 10,2014 at the request of the Mayor and City Council.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

PATRICK H. WEST
