TITLE

Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,500, offset by the Fourth Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide support to Long Beach Little League for their recently launched Girls with Game Initiative; and

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,500 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION

Long Beach Little League recently launched the Girls with Game Initiative. Its goal is to provide female players with specific training to strengthen their game skills. Girls who participate in sports have higher self-esteem, increased confidence, improved physical health and body image, greater academic achievement, and are more likely to be future leaders. This initiative will serve as inspiration, learning experience, and encouragement for girls who participate in such an extensive sport. In honor of Women’s History Month, and in support of the players in the Fourth District, approval of this recommendation is requested.

This matter has been reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on February 27, 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide funds to support Long Beach Little League. The total appropriation increase of $1,500 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease in appropriation of the Fourth Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

DARYL SUPERNAW, COUNCILMAN
