DISCUSSION
Since 2003, Rosie’s Dog Beach in Belmont Shore has been the City’s only dog beach and the only off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles County. Located on Ocean Blvd between Granada and Roycroft Avenues, Rosie’s Dog Beach provides dogs 4.1 acres of free-roaming recreational space from 6AM to 8PM seven days a week, all year long. While users are encouraged to bring their own supplies, the City provides bags and scoopers, ultimately making this area a very popular and very busy dog beach.

Long Beach is a dog friendly city and there is a need for an additional dog beach site that is more accessible for dog-owners who live west of Belmont Shore. Waterfront residents from Council Districts 1 and 2, residents from Central Long Beach, and all dog-owners who live west of Council District 3, would benefit from an additional dog beach site located in District 2. The beachside landscape in Council District 2 offers ample space and is similar in character to the Rosie’s Dog Beach site.

This letter requests the City Manager to work with the Parks, Recreation, and Marine Department and the Public Works Tidelands Development Team and report back in 60 days potential sites located in Council District 2 for a second dog off-leash beach site in Long Beach.
