TITLE
Recommendation to adopt resolution authorizing City Manager to execute an agreement with the Conservation Corps of Long Beach to provide landscape and building maintenance, moving services and related tasks as a component of their job skills training and environmental education program, from May 1, 2009 to May 1, 2010, with the option to renew for two one-year renewals periods on a cost reimbursement basis in an estimated annual amount not to exceed $250,000, with the option of adding expenditures up to 10 percent (or $25,000) above the annual contract amount, if necessary and if funds are available. DISCUSSION
City Council approval is being requested authorizing the City Manager to execute an agreement with the Conservation Corps of long Beach (CClB). The CClB is the only organization of its kind and provides a unique service as well as serving as a leader in job training and environmental education for young adults through various conservation and improvement projects for public agencies. Typical projects for the City include sidewalk maintenance, movinglrelocation services, playground refurbishment, mini-park development, landscaping, tree planting and litter and graffiti removal.
The CClS has completed 22 years working with the City. During that time, 5,000 young people have participated in conservation and improvement projects and over $63.5 million has been put back into the community through these projects, including steam cleaning of 36 million square yards of concrete, stairs and bus shelters; the pouring of 600 square yards of concrete to replace damaged sidewalks; the distribution of 4,500 recycling containers resulting in 21.4 million pounds of recyclables collected; the maintenance of landscaping at Cesar Chavez Park, Tanaka Park, Peace Park and 4th Street Park, and the planting of approximately 60,000 trees and shrubs, to name a few.
