TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file an update from Economic Development regarding the submitted Amazon Coast proposal in partnership with the City of Huntington Beach.
DISCUSSION
It was announced in September of this year that Amazon.com was seeking a 2nd Headquarters in the United States which would result in 50,000 new jobs. This opportunity would be an incredible jolt in our local economy. It would also represent the most jobs in the City of Long Beach from a single employer, more than the existing top 9 Private and Public Employers combined. Long Beach has the perfect mix of economic drivers to provide a great location for the growth of Amazon.
As the 7th largest city in California which is the world's 5th largest economy, the City of Long Beach partnered with fellow coastal city, Huntington Beach, to create a proposal titled "Amazon Coast". This proposal includes three campuses, two in Long Beach and an additional campus in Huntington Beach. The 164-acre Huntington "Sand Campus" location would be housed at the existing Boeing facility on Bolsa Avenue and the Long Beach locations would be split between the "Sea Campus" in Downtown Long Beach at 1 World Trade Center and the "Air Campus" near the Long Beach Airport at the Boeing C-17 site.
This joint proposal has already been deemed as one of the "most ambitious proposals" by Business Insider.
