TITLE

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $7,600 to offset a transfer to the Public Works Department.

DISCUSSION
Over the past several years, there has been an increase in thefts and vandalism along Atlantic Avenue, costing thousands of dollars in damage and loss. In a recent site visit with the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, staff and business owners indicated that the lights along the sidewalk are irregularly spaced and leave significant areas dark in front of businesses. They requested enhanced pedestrian lighting on existing poles to help secure property, assist with security camera visibility, deter future incidences, and improve pedestrian safety.

An additional benefit to upgraded bulbs is that the new lamps use 50% of the electricity of the previous bulbs. At 27 cents per KWH, and a yearly average of 12 hours of nighttime operation per day, the city can save approximately $47 per year per upgraded bulb.

Supplemental funding is needed to address this critical safety need:
