TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report on travel to Japan, Korea and China for a trade mission.

DISCUSSION
From June 2 to June 15, I traveled to Japan, Korea and China as part of an extensive trade mission to promote Long Beach. The primary purpose of the trip was to build goodwill and discuss substantive issues with Port customers throughout Asia. I was accompanied by Commissioners and staff from the Harbor Department.

In total, the trip encompassed 8 cities in the three countries: Seoul, Korea; Tokyo, Japan;
Yokkaichi, Japan; Toyota City, Japan; Qingdao, China; Hong Kong, China; Shenzhen, China;
Shanghai, China. I predicated in meetings with ten shipping line customers of the Port of Long Beach and with the leaders of two of Long Beach's sister cities (Yokkaichi and Qingdao). Our delegation conducted a tour of an automobile manufacturing plant at one of Port's biggest customers, Toyota, and inspected three Asian ports (Qingdao, Yantian, Shanghai).

In Shenzhen, China the POli officials signed a groundbreaking memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Yantian Intemational Container Tenllinal pledging cooperation on environmental issues. In Hong Kong, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced that they would reinvest their savings eamed from the Green POli discount into the Long Beach community by making a charitable donation of$150,000 to the City of Long Beach.
