Recommendation to request City Manager to communicate the City's appreciation of the long standing relationship between Champ Car World Series and the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach.
DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Grand Prix (LBGP) has been a phenomenal success generating an estimated 25 to 40 million dollars in economic benefits to the City of Long Beach and invaluable exposure on an international scale. From its inception, the success of the LBGP was based on world-class open wheel auto racing competition starting with Formula One to the current Champ Car World Series (CCWS). This long-standing relationship between the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, the City and Champ Car has evolved over the years
to produce the premiere street race emulated across the nation. We have had an opportunity to meet with the owners of Champ Car to receive a presentation' on the organization's future plans for growth. The inclusion of new forms of racing such as the Drifting Series and outreach to the youth and minority markets positions CCWS in the fastest growing segments of the industry. CCWS also maintains a strong presence in the community by sponsoring events at local high schools and charities such as CARA. These strategies are consistent with the bold vision that has made the LBGP an
international success. This success is critical to the economic viability of the City's largest public event. We would like to request the City Manager to communicate the City's
appreciation for the past success of Champ Car World Series and the LBGP.
