TITLE
Recommendation to adopt Plans and Specifications No. R-6843 for intersection modifications at Walnut Avenue and Alamitos Avenue; award the contract to Sully Miller Contracting, Inc., of Brea, CA, in the amount of $851,569, plus a 15 percent contingency in the amount of $127,735, for a total contract amount not to exceed $979,304; authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute all documents necessary to enter into the contract, including any necessary amendments thereto;
Accept Categorical Exemption CE 138-08; and
Increase appropriations in the Gas Tax Street Improvement Fund (SR 181) in the Public Works Department (PW) by $450,000, offset by federal MAP-21 grant funds. (District 6)
DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into a contract with Sully Miller Contracting, Inc. (Sully Miller), for intersection modifications at Walnut Avenue and Alamitos Avenue.
The intersection modifications at Walnut Avenue and Alamitos Avenue are in need of rehabilitation. The work to be done consists of construction of a new four-way signalized intersection, which will include the realignment of Alamitos Avenue, removal of a diagonal portion of East 20th Street, widening of East 20th Street, and realignment of East Wesley Drive. This bid was advertised in the Long Beach Press-Telegram on February 11, 2016, and 3,917 potential bidders specializing in construction were notified of the bid opportunity. Of those notified, 81 downloaded the bid via the City’s electronic bid system. The bid documents were made available by the Purchasing Division, located on the seventh floor of City Hall, and on the Division’s website at www.longbeach.gov/purchasing
