TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file a presentation from Human Relations Commission for Women's History Month.
DISCUSSION
The United States celebrated the first National Woman's Day on February 28,1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America. This observance was to honor the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York where women protested for better working conditions.
In 1981, Congress passed the joint resolution, Public Law 97-28 which designated the week of March 7, 1982 to be "Women's History Week." Throughout the following years, Congress continued passing joint resolutions. In 1987, Congress passed another joint resolution, Public Law 100-9 which designated the month of March as "Women's History Month." This joint resolution requested for President Ronald Reagan to issue a proclamation to call upon the people of the United States to observe such month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
In the history of the United States, there were many moments where women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, Alice Paul, among many more advocates, fought for change and rights of women.
This presentation celebrates and observes the progress women have achieved in the areas of politics, restorative justice, violence towards women, and economic stability.
