TITLE

Recommendation to receive and file a presentation on Filipino American History Month.

DISCUSSION

Filipino immigrants first arrived in the United States at Morro Bay, California, 435 years ago today, on October 18, 1587. Filipino American History Month celebrates this day as well as the birth of Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong, whose Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee merged with Cesar Chavez’s National Farm Workers Association in 1965 to form the United Farm Workers.

Long Beach is home to a vibrant and diverse Filipino American community. According to the US Census, more than 22,000 residents identify as Filipino American, with over 14,000 being immigrants.1 Their contributions to our city deserve to be celebrated.
