Recommendation to confirm the appointment by the Cultural Heritage Commission of Peter Devereaux to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
On April 11, 2016, the Cultural Heritage Commission voted unanimously to approve Peter Devereaux to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association (LBNMHA). The Cultural Heritage Commission is responsible for appointing three of the nine members to the Board of Trustees of the Association, with confirmation of their appointment by the City Council. Mr. Devereaux’s current term on the Board expires on June 30, 2016. If reappointed, he would begin serving a second term (Exhibit A - Navy Memorial Heritage Association Letter).
When the Long Beach Naval Station and Shipyard was demolished, a mitigation measure was established to address the loss of this historic resource. A part of the mitigation measure was to establish the Long Beach Heritage Fund (Fund), consisting of $4.5 million to be deposited as a dedicated fund within the California Heritage Fund of the State of California. The purpose of the Fund is to support the identification, evaluation, preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and interpretation of historical resources within the municipal boundaries of the City.
The LBNMHA Board of Trustees administers the Fund. Other organizations that participate in the administration of the Fund include the Historical Society of Long Beach (two members), Long Beach Heritage (two members), and the Wilmore City Heritage Association (two members). The agreement stipulates that the Cultural Heritage Commission shall appoint three trustees that are approved by the City Council. The term is for a three-year period.
