Recommendation to authorize City Manager to accept $7,500 in grant funds from California Council for the Humanities (Cal Humanities) for the California Reads War Comes Home program; execute any documents necessary for the administration of this project and increase appropriations in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) in the Department of Library Services Department (LS) by $7,500. DISCUSSION
On October 29, 2013, the Department of Library Services received notification of a grant award of $7,500 to the Long Beach Public Library from the Cal Humanities for the California Reads grant. Long Beach was among 43 library systems awarded to participate in this programming throughout 2014.
The purpose of the California Reads grant is to spark community engagement in conversations about topics of importance to Californians. This grant will provide Library events and services around Karl Marlantes’ book What It Is Like to Go to War. This grant will allow residents of this highly diverse city to explore US Veterans through various special events that consist of book discussions, art displays, historical exhibits, lectures, performances, films and author visits. The grant funds will pay for supplies, advertising, equipment and payment for guest speakers.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on March 4, 2014, in order to proceed with the California Reads program.
FISCAL IMPACT
The grant has been awarded for an amount not to exceed $7,500, and requires a matching contribution of in-kind services and materials. The Library’s contribution will include salaried staff time, venue rental, use of equipment, volunteer time and program supplies.
