TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute all necessary documents to enter into agreements with LA 2024 Exploratory Committee, pertaining to the 2024 Olympic Bid. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
LA 2024 started the bid process to bring the 2024 Olympics back to the Los Angeles area. As part of the LA 2024 bid package, Long Beach has been chosen as one of the locations to hold specific sporting events.
In order to meet the deadlines set forth by the International Olympic Committee, LA 2024 requires the City to execute certain application documents in a timely manner including, without limitation, documents relating to venue availability, advertising, and security. All such documents executed by the City relate only to events occurring within the city of Long Beach.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard F. Anthony on February 6, 2017 and by Assistant Finance Director Lea Eriksen on February 3, 2017.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on February 21, 2017, to meet any additional deadlines related to the 2024 Olympic Bid.
FISCAL IMPACT
If the City of Los Angeles is awarded the 2024 Olympic Bid, the City of Long Beach may incur staffing and venue expenses associated with participation in the Olympic Games. Should the City be expected to incur any costs, the City will work with LA 2024 in pursuing full-cost-recovery. Any contracts related to the 2024 Olympic Bid exceeding $100,000 will be brought forward for City Council approval and will include an identified funding source, if needed. If the Olympic Games come to this region, there will be new jobs created, which are directly related to the venues chosen within the city of Long Beach.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
Respectfully Submitted,
PATRICK H. WEST
CITY MANAGER
