TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to prepare a resolution recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to increase awareness about breast cancer and promote healthy lifestyle choices that reduce the risk of cancer.
DISCUSSION
October signals the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month, an annual national campaign started in 1985 to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget there are practical steps we can take to encourage others to make healthy choices that reduce the risk of cancer and detect the disease in its early stages.
Cancer is a disease that affects everyone, but it doesn’t affect everyone equally due to economic, social, or environmental disadvantage and health disparities resulting from systematic inequalities. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and second leading cause of cancer death, after lung cancer, in women in the United States. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8.
As a breast cancer survivor, it’s important we spread awareness about this common but preventable disease. I am asking the City to recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and thereby support taking steps to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage residents to make healthy lifestyles choices that reduce the risk of cancer. Doing so raises awareness about this disease and helps ensure our local communities are better prepared to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer.
