DISCUSSION

The Moonlight Movies on the Beach 2023 is a series of free public events that bring the community together through entertainment. Moonlight Movies on the Beach is going on its twenty-first year giving free family friendly entertainment to Belmont Shore.

Friends of Rec Park Bandshell is hosting free concerts at the Rec Park Bandshell with the goal of: bringing back the regular use of the historic landmark Bandshell; raising funds over time through public grants and business and private donations for full renovation of the Bandshell; focusing on local talent and the involvement of our community’s youth, creating a lasting foundation that will promote the use and maintenance of the Bandshell for years to come.

The annual Uptown Jazz Festival has become a staple in the District 9 community every summer. It’s a place where families and neighbors come to experience great music, good food, a bar garden, vendor booths, a Kids’ Zone, and more. We would like to support Councilmember Dr. Ricks-Oddie in hosting this citywide event.

Bridge the Gap Tennis Management is hosting a free youth tennis play day in Council District 3. This event is free and open to the public, and will include free tennis court usage, racquet demos, and lunch for the participants.

The Festival of Women Authors had its beginning in Long Beach, California in 1982. It was created when two women, Harriet Williams and Virginia Laddey were appalled to discover the scarcity of women authors represented in the reading lists of local high schools.

This matter was reviewed by Budget Analyst Joe R. Guerrero on June 26, 2023.

EQUITY LENS STATEMENT:

Staff will consider issues of equity and access with any program proposals brought forward to ensure the City’s commitment for everyone reaching their highest level of health and potential for a successful life, regardless of background, neighborhood, or identity.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions to Beach Ventures Enterprises, Friends of Rec Park Bandshell, Special Events and Filming, Bridge the Gap Tennis, and Literary Women Long Beach Festival to support their events as written above. The total appropriation increase of $8,250 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease in appropriation of the Third Council District One-Time District Priority Funds in the General Fund in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

KRISTINA DUGGAN COUNCILMEMBER,
