DISCUSSION

Councilwoman Megan Kerr would like to support the following organizations:

Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Inc. (Long Beach Pride), a 501(c)3 non-profit, is an all-volunteer organization that produces the annual three-day Long Beach Pride festival, parade, and teen pride. The third largest Pride festival and parade in California, they celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with a focus on inclusion, and work to educate the wider community that diversity builds a stronger and healthier society. Taking pride in what they have achieved since 1984, Long Beach Pride strives to teach future generations that the battle for acceptance continues. Their mission is to produce and support activities that educate, encourage, and celebrate PRIDE, inclusion, and respect for humanity. The transfer of these One-time District Priority Funds will help to support the 2023 Pride Parade and Festival on August 4-6, 2023, and their ongoing mission.

The Trans Pride Long Beach Festival 2023 was held on July 29, 2023. Its mission is to provide a space for Trans and Non-Binary members of our community to be themselves, welcome all members of our community at any stage of transitioning, spread awareness, visibility, and representation, to advocate for our rights, and to build strength in unity! The event was free and open to the public. The transfer of these One-time District Priority Funds will help to support the event and their ongoing mission.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions of $5,000 to Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Inc. to support the 2023 Pride Parade and Festival on August 4-6, 2023, and $500 to California Families in Focus for Trans Pride Long Beach Festival 2023 that was held on July 29, 2023, as written above. The total appropriation increase of $5,500 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Fifth Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond normal budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

MEGAN KERR COUNCILWOMAN,
