TITLE

Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,000, offset by the Fourth Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a contribution to the Millikan High School Baseball Boosters, Inc. in support of their “Anything is Possible” capital improvement campaign; and

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION

Millikan High School is in Council District 4 at 2800 Snowden Avenue. Millikan has a public high school baseball team comprised of Long Beach residents many who reside in the district. The Millikan High School Baseball Boosters, Inc. is a non-profit organization that supports the players, families, and coaches all who work in unison to raise funding to renovate and refurbish the playing fields, equipment, and training facilities at the high school.  The organization has launched a 5 X 5 $500,000 5-year capital campaign goal. Their intent is to raise funds for facility improvements including the installation of outfield fencing, replacement of the infield with artificial turf, refurbishing dugouts, and much more. A contribution by Council District 4 will support the cause which will ultimately beautify a renowned district asset which is not only used by the baseball team, but by the community at-large. Currently, joint-use partnerships allow the fields to be used by numerous sport leagues, non-profit organizations, and our very own Parks, Recreation & Marine Department when providing recreational services to Long Beach youth and adults from all areas of the city. Most of these partnerships allow for the activities to be provided to Long Beach residents at a minimal or no cost.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

[Timing Considerations]

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to the Millikan High School Baseball Boosters, Inc.  in support of their “Anything is Possible” capital improvement campaign. The total appropriation increase of $1,000 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease in appropriation of the Fourth Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff time beyond normal budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.
