TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft resolution in support of the State of Urban Manufacturing report as a convening partner in an effort to cultivate industrial and workforce development in Long Beach.
DISCUSSION
The State of Urban Manufacturing report is a 2017 workforce and industrial development study across thirteen United States cities, highlighting the current state of manufacturing in an effort towards sustaining and growing manufacturing in cities, and Long Beach has been identified as a potential pilot city for this study. The leader of the study is the Urban Manufacturing Alliance, a national non-profit organization with approximately five hundred organizations and city partners who are focused on revitalizing manufacturing in metropolitan hubs.
Long Beach-based Localism Inc. is the local community partner for this national project and will implement the study along with community and industry partners. Esri has partnered to integrate the study's data into the forthcoming open data portal and GeoHub, and primary funding for the project is provided by The Kauffman Foundation, Google and Etsy. The national report, including thirteen, cities will be published by NYC-based Pratt Center for Community Development.
The State of Urban Manufacturing (SUM) report will provide a baseline on the current state of manufacturing in pilot cities to better understand how to improve and scale manufacturing; and participating pilot cities will have the opportunity to coordinate with one another and have their work showcased on a national stage. The SUM report will begin with a profile of current manufacturing based on current datasets and a literature review, and the second phase will provide insights into manufacturing based on primary data collection in partnership with Urban Manufacturing Alliance member cities.
