DISCUSSION

The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability, the Departments of Public Works and Health and Human Services have partnered with Walk Long Beach, the Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation, and many others to produce the Ranchos Walk 2023 event. This event is scheduled for Saturday, September 23, 2023, and is free and open to the public.

The annual Ranchos Walk is approximately a ten-mile hike from Rancho Los Cerritos to Rancho Los Alamitos along the crest of the Signal Hill uplift. The route is primarily located on public sidewalks and uses signalized crossings at major roadway intersections. The route passes through the three highest points along the ridgeline: Reservoir Hill, Hilltop Park in Signal Hill, and Longview Point at Willow Spring Park while also passing by numerous other points of interest. The route also connects pedestrians to California State University Long Beach. Once at Rancho Los Alamitos, walkers can tour the historic adobe and gardens, listen to historic information provided by docents and enjoy food and drinks.

As this event is expected to attract over 400 people and calls for special attention to the city’s rich history, natural advantages, and resources, approval to provide supplemental funding to Ranchos Los Alamitos Foundation is requested.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

[Timing Considerations]

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation to support the Ranchos Walk 2023 event. An appropriation increase of $10,000 in the Special Advertising and Promotion Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by the Fourth Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION
