DISCUSSION

On August 27, 2023 the Zaferia Business Association is hosting Happy Sundays Fest, a free multi-venue music festival highlighting established and emerging local artists. Now in its seventh year, Happy Sundays is a celebration of community and spirit taking place in the Zaferia District. This event aims to promote local business and local communities and will feature over 40 acts providing musical and comedy performances. A $2,125 contribution will support event costs and provide transportation between different venues.

LB Food Scene Week took place from August 9, 2023 to August 18, 2023. This weeklong event aimed to showcase the best of Long Beach’s culinary scene and bring together the community in a spirit of celebration and exploration. Participating restaurants offered diners special menus, opportunities to connect with local businesses, and be part of a city-wide event that helps promote the Long Beach food scene. A $1,500 contribution supported advertising and outreach costs so local restaurants can attract new customers and put Long Beach on the map as a culinary destination.

On August 27, 2023 the International Imperial Court of Long Beach will host their Back to School Drag Bingo event. Founded in 1971, the International Imperial Court of Long Beach is the longest-running LGBTQ non-profit in the greater Long Beach area. This drag bingo event aims to raise funds to help provide school supplies to families in need. It is appropriate for the City Council to support events that assist families acquire school supplies.

The third annual Trans Pride took place on July 29, 2023 at Recreation Park. The purpose of this one-day event was to highlight, empower, inspire and normalize our vibrant Trans and Nonbinary community, and to show strength in unity with Trans folks and allies. The event featured music, resources, speakers, food trucks, and a kids fun zone. A $500 contribution will help offset programming and event costs.

On August 18, 2023, Friends of the Long Beach Public Library hosted their Librarian Appreciation event to acknowledge, honor and show our gratitude to our outstanding librarians. A $300 contribution helps offset costs incurred from event programming, rental supplies, and catering.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions to the Zaferia Business Association to support the Happy Sundays Music Festival, Brian James Addison to support LB Food Scene Week, the International Imperial Court of Long Beach, Inc. for their Back to School Drag Bingo event, California Families in Focus for the Trans Pride event, and Friends of the Long Beach Public Library for the Library Appreciation event. The total appropriation increase of $5,425 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Second Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and have a minimal impact on meeting other City Council priorities.
