DISCUSSION

Centro CHA is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving and advancing the Latino/Hispanic community. Through their various services, initiatives, and programs Centro CHA has played an integral role in the improvement of social and economic development and continues to be a beacon of hope to the community. With the work of their team and community leaders, Centro CHA envisions a thriving space where investments for low-income environments are a priority, residents are connected and civically engaged, unemployment is low and there is an abundance of readily available resources and housing. A $3,000 contribution will help support their Leadership Awards Recognition and Hispanic Heritage Gala on October 13, 2023.

Since 1977, WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) has helped thousands of families overcome the trauma caused by domestic abuse. WSLB assists victims and their children by providing safe housing and supportive services including an emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, social services support, legal and health advocacy, and much more. The mission of WSLB is to eliminate domestic violence through compassionate intervention, education, and personal empowerment. On Sunday, October 8, from 6 to 10 pm, the WomenShelter celebrated 46 years of working to eliminate domestic violence at their 2023 “Leading with Love Gala” at the Queen Mary. The Leading with Love gala brought the community together to raise funds to support survivors of domestic violence with an opportunity to win a ride for two on the signature Goodyear Blimp, and exciting silent and live auctions.

Long Beach Collective Association (LBCA) is a non-profit organization committed to safe and legal cannabis access through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and policy development with the City of Long Beach and State of California. LBCA seeks to decrease stigma with continued cannabis education in the community, at City Hall, and in academia; increase cannabis tourism by advocating for event & lounge policies; and reform cannabis taxes at local and state government to level the legal playing field and generate affordability in the aboveground market. On Monday, October 16th, LBCA is hosting the 1st Annual High Tee golf tournament at the Old Ranch golf course in Seal Beach. A $1,200 contribution supports LBCA’s advocacy and education initiatives.

Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Inc. (Long Beach Pride), a 501(c)3 non-profit, is an all-volunteer organization that produces the annual three-day Long Beach Pride festival, parade and teen pride. The third largest Pride festival and parade in California, they celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with a focus on inclusion, and work to educate the wider community that diversity builds a stronger and healthier society. Taking pride in what they have achieved since 1984, Long Beach Pride strives to teach future generations that the battle for acceptance continues. Their mission is to produce and support activities that educate, encourage and celebrate PRIDE, inclusion, and respect for humanity. A $1,000 contribution supported their annual swearing in ceremony on September 23, 2023.

The Historical Society of Long Beach (HSLB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Their mission is to connect people to the past and to the place they live by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting the material history of Long Beach. Through their programs and services, they help develop an inclusive community narrative that gives residents a greater understanding of their role in the story of their neighborhood and their city. The HSLB serves as an important resource for groups and individuals including preservationists, architects, historians, artists, filmmakers, authors, journalists, educators, researchers, students, policymakers, genealogists and the community at large. A $500 contribution will help support their 27th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour on October 28, 2023.

Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to ensuring political and economic parity for Latinas through leadership, advocacy, and education to benefit all communities and the status of women. HOPE has focused on empowering communities through advocacy, leadership training, and increasing knowledge on the contributions Latinas have made to advance the status of women for the past 33 years. A $500 contribution supported their Latina Empowerment Day on October 6, 2023.

Pathways to Independence is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to empower young women through education, therapy, housing, healthcare, and mentoring. Their alumni have transformed their lives through graduating college and even pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees. Their mission is to break the cycle of poverty and abuse. A $500 contribution will help support their 80’s Flashback Fundraiser on October 7, 2023.

Partners of Parks is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, public benefit corporation supporting Parks, Recreation, Marine Department programs and facilities in the City of Long Beach. They were established by a group of residents who were concerned that clean, open park space be kept available to all residents at a time when cuts were being made to park services. They are working with the Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association (ABNA) to provide a Halloween Festival at Bixby Park. A contribution of $300 will help support their ABNA Halloween Festival on October 12, 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions to Centro CHA to support their Leadership Awards Recognition and Hispanic Heritage Gala, WomenShelter of Long Beach for the Leading with Love Gala, the Long Beach Collective Association for their High Tee golf tournament, the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Inc. to support their annual swearing in ceremony, the Historical Society of Long Beach to support their 27th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality for their Latina Empowerment Day, Pathways to Independence for their 80’s Flashback Fundraiser, and Partners of Parks for the ABNA Halloween Festival. The total appropriation increase of $9,500 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Second Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and have a minimal impact on meeting other City Council priorities.
