TITLE

Recommendation to confirm two reappointments to the Citizen Police Complaint Commission; one reappointment and one new appointment to the Planning Commission; three reappointments and two new appointments to the Redevelopment Agency pursuant to Section 509 of the Long Beach City Charter and Sections 2.03.065 and 2.66.020 of the Long Beach Municipal Code.

 

DISCUSSION

Based on their years of excellent service during their previous term, I recommend the following commissioners for reappointment .

 

Citizen Police Complaint Commission

Lisa Herbst -                                          Reappointment

Andrew Jones -                     Reappointment

 

Planning Commission

Matthew Jenkins -                     Reappointment

Charles Durnin -                     New Appointment to fill Nick Sramek's un-expired term

 

Charles Durnin is a retired physician and a 60-year resident of Long Beach.  He currently

resides in the 3rd District.  During his long career he has served as Community Hospital Chief of

Staff, volunteer Medical Director of Tichenor Orthopedic Clinic for Children, and member of the

Memorial Hospital Foundation.  Charles is also the past President of Stan West Corp. (Java Lanes

Bowling Alley), Community Plaza Apartment Association, and Costa D'Oro Homeowners

Association.  His involvement in the community has earned him local recognition as the recipient

of the 2000 Rotary Cup of Kindness Award, the 2002 Long Beach City Pride Partnership Award

and a Long Beach Police Award of Heroism.  He and his wife are proud supporters of Long

Beach's local symphony, art museum and aquarium.

Lillian Kawasaki is a 4-year resident of Long Beach with 30 years of public service.  She currently resides in the 8th District.  Elected in November 2006 to the Water Replenishment District Division 3, Mrs. Kawasaki serves to oversee and manage the groundwater for 7 cities, which include Long Beach, Cerritos, and Lakewood.  Ms. Kawasaki previously served on the Long Beach Water Commission.  Additionally she has served the City of Los Angeles as head of the Environmental Affairs Department, General Manager of the Community Development Department, Assistant General Manager of Environmental Affairs and Economic Development Organizations for DWP, and the Port of Los Angeles in the Environmental Management Division.  Lillian's involvement with community organizations includes Friends of Manzanar, Women's Foundation Donor Circle, and California Small Business Advisory Committee.

 

John Cross is retired and has been a Long Beach resident for over 50 years.  He is currently a resident of the 7th District.  He has served the City as Chair of the Citizen Police Complaint Commission for two consecutive terms.  He has also served on the Code Enforcement Team for West Long Beach, the Mayor's Task Force on Commissions, Senator Lowenthal's Environmental Advisory Group and as President of the West Long Beach Association .
