DISCUSSION

On April 19, 2016, the Asian Pacific American Librarians’ Association/American Indian Librarians’ Association granted $600 via their Talk Story Committee to the Department of Library Services to support a cultural event to relaunch the North Neighborhood Library’s current Cultural Conversations program in the new Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library. Talk Story: Sharing Stories, Sharing Culture is a literacy program designed to reach out to Asian Pacific American (APA) and American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) children and their families through community cultural events and programs that celebrate their stories through books, oral traditions and art.

During the current fiscal year, the North Neighborhood Library has been presenting the Cultural Conversations program with support from the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library. Cultural Conversations has been successful in providing outreach to and awareness of the local Polynesian community and their cultural contribution to North Long Beach. This grant award will be used to host a single event on Saturday, November 12, 2016.  The event will focus on Polynesian culture and will include music, performances, crafts, movies and storytelling. The Library will also partner with the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum to create displays that will share Polynesian culture with North Long Beach residents. The planned event will relaunch the current Cultural Conversations program in the new, larger Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library to continue serving the current participants of the cultural program while reaching out to the larger community as well.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Amy R. Webber on June 7, 2016 and by Budget Analysis Officer Rhutu Amin Gharib on June 20, 2016.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

City Council action is requested on July 5, 2016, to receive the grant funds and begin coordinating and booking participants for the event, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 12, 2016.

FISCAL IMPACT

The grant has been awarded for an amount not to exceed $600, with no City matching requirement. An appropriation increase is requested in the General Grants Fund (SR120) in the Library Services Department (LS) for $600 for a Cultural Conversations program event. There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.
