DISCUSSION

The Alamitos Heights Improvement Association’s 2023 Alamitos Heights Neighborhood Picnic is a community event that is free and open to the public. The Alamitos Heights Improvement Association is a volunteer organization made up of homeowners and residents dedicated to maintaining and improving the quality of life in our neighborhood.

The Mayor’s Trophy Charity Golf Tournament proceeds benefit the Long Beach Century Club. The Long Beach Century Club is a nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers dedicated to the support of amateur athletics and athletes in the City of Long Beach, including middle schools, high schools and colleges.

Juneteenth is the oldest national celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The 2023 Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 17, from 11:00AM-7:00PM, back at the Rainbow Lagoon Park (400 E. Shoreline Dr.). The Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration is the premier destination in Southern California to celebrate this important holiday.

Wild West Women, Inc is a non-profit that increases awareness of women’s achievements and their roles in history. Wild West Women, Inc, in partnership with Long Beach Suffrage 100, will be celebrating the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Centennial by hosting the inaugural Long Beach Woman’s Fair on July 18th, 2023.

For more than 30 years, Temple Israel Long Beach has organized a Make a Difference Day in Long Beach to unite the community for a day of doing good work collecting food and furniture for those in need, raising money to support feeding the homeless, and contacting local organizations if there were any handywork projects they needed people power to complete. Make a Difference Day at Temple Israel Long Beach was held on April 30th, 2023 and was a huge success.

The 10th Annual Black and White Gala celebrates the achievements of the LGBTQ community of greater Long Beach. The LGBTQ Center Long Beach advances equity for LGBTQ people through culturally responsive advocacy, education, programs, and services.

The Grape Expectations Gala is the Long Beach Public Library Foundation’s signature fundraising event to support our work on behalf of the 12 Long Beach public libraries. Dress is cocktail attire. Since 1996, the Long Beach Public Library Foundation has fundraised and advocated for equal access to literacy, education, technology, and essential community resources through the Long Beach Public Library.

EQUITY LENS STATEMENT:

Staff will consider issues of equity and access with any program proposals brought forward to ensure the City’s commitment for everyone reaching their highest level of health and potential for a successful life, regardless of background, neighborhood, or identity.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions to Alamitos Heights Improvement Associations, Long Beach Century Club, Partners of Parks, Wild West Women, Inc., Temple Israel Long Beach, LGBTQ Center of Long Beach, and to the Long Beach Public Library Foundation. The total appropriation increase of $2,500 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease in appropriation of the Third Council District One-Time District Priority Funds in the General Fund in the Citywide Activities Department. This recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Respectfully Submitted,

KRISTINA DUGGAN COUNCILMEMBER,
