TITLE

Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $400, offset by Second Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a contribution to Wild West Women Inc. to support Long Beach Suffrage 100’s Farewell Suffrage Tea on August 26; and

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $400 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION

Long Beach Suffrage 100 is a group dedicated to the recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment and the advancement of Women’s Equality.

The group has focused for two years on California winning the vote on October 10, 1911, and on the significance of Latina participation.

Throughout 2020 and 2021, Long Beach Suffrage 100 has uplifted the history, efforts, and successes of the Women’s Suffrage movement that won the right to vote with the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. They have also uplifted the cause of women’s and gender equality beyond the 19th amendment, and have embraced teaching our community about American Women’s History.

As August 26 is National Women’s Equality Day, it is a fitting time for the community to celebrate, one year delayed, the 19th Amendment Centennial with a Farewell Suffrage Tea event, which is free and open to the public.

This matter was reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on July 30, 2021.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager Department to provide a contribution to Wild West Women Inc. to support Long Beach Suffrage 100’s Farewell Suffrage Tea on August 26. The total appropriation increase in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $400 is offset by a decrease of appropriation of Second Council District one-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and have a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with the recommendation.

SUGGESTED ACTION
